Public Transportation: Great LANta Bus System and Easy Access to Interstates

What Allentown lacks in a subway system makes up for in an affordable, well-developed and extensive bus system. The Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Administration (LANta) makes it easy for you to ditch driving and take public transportation to work. Over 83 buses serve over 30 routes in the downtown and suburban Allentown area, roughly a third of which are low emissions vehicles.

If you like to take day or weekend trips, or have friends up and down the Mid-Atlantic, Allentown is well-situated. New York City is about an hour and a half drive on Interstate 78 and has daily bus service from several locations. Downtown Philadelphia is a short one hour drive down the Northeast Extension (Interstate 476). New Jersey and Delaware Beaches are a 3-4 hour drive and there’s even great skiing an easy drive to the north in the Poconos. The nation’s capital, Washington, DC, is less than 200 miles via Interstate 95 south of Philadelphia – and the state’s capital, Harrisburg, is easily accessed on Interstate 78. Finally, the area is home to the Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE).
