Public Transportation: SEPTA & Convenient Expressways
It is easy to get around Philadelphia. As one of the most walkable cities in the United States, you may not even need to own a car. If you live in one of the downtown neighborhoods of Center City, then everything you need is likely with a few blocks of your home.
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority runs a massive network of buses, trollies and light rail that provides access to all parts of the city and the even the furthest suburbs. You can easily commune to work or take a day trip out to the country.
Amtrak also provides service from 30th Street Station in downtown Philadelphia. From there you can go North to New York, South to Washington, DC and West to Harrisburg and beyond.
The city has many major highways to connect make it easy to get around.
- The Schuykill Expressway is a major freeway going West from Philadelphia. To the East, it feeds directly into the Walt Whitman Bridge.
- There are three major bridges that cross the Delaware River into South Jersey. They are the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, the Betsy Ross Bridge and the Walt Whitman Bridge.
- The Pennsylvania Turnpike passes just to the North of Philadelphia.
- Interstate 495 circles the city to the West.
- Interstate 95 goes South to Washington DC and North toward New York City.
